Visualisatie ‘Mathematics’

Mathematics is een van de negen tracks van het album ‘Poetry versus Orchestra’, een samenwerking tussen de Britste spoken-word artiest Hollie McNish en het Metropole Orkest.
Hollie staat bekend om haar sterke en krachtige woorden en de vertolking hiervan. Haar poëzie varieert van verheffende en mooie woorden van haar als moeder tot sociaalkritische en intrigerende statements over de hedendaagse samenleving.
Jules Buckley en Chris Weeler werkten samen om de muziek voor de gedichten van Hollie te componeren. Deze muziek wordt gespeeld door het Metropole Orkest en ondersteunt met zijn unieke sound en energie de woorden van Hollie.
De uitkomst van deze samenwerking is ‘een installatie van muziek die het publiek uitnodigt een kijkje te nemen in deze sociaal-politieke wereld’. (Jules Buckley)

Martin Pyper van ME Studio in Amsterdam werd gevraagd het artwork voor het album te ontwerpen. Daarnaast creëerde hij een stop-motion video voor een van de tracks op het album: Mathematics. Tijdens het ontwerp proces van het artwork maakte hij gebruik van spijkers en wol om de boodschap van het bijzondere en krachtige album te ondersteunen. Dezelfde techniek gebruikte hij vervolgens voor de Mathematics video. Deze track bevat poëzie die de weerstand van de samenleving tegen immigranten laat zien.

De video die Martin maakte versterkt het gedicht met een visueel aspect, wat bijdraagt aan een nog krachtigere boodschap. De combinatie van de sterke politieke boodschap van Hollie, de muziek gecomponeerd door Jules gespeeld door het Metropole Orkest en de stop-motion video van Martin kan gezien worden als een waar kunstwerk.

‘As an artist, Hollie writes about social issues, prejudice, hatred and the skewed norms of a dysfunctional society.

The technique with steel pins and string felt right for this particular album and the personal, direct and unpolished message it brings. 

Using icons was a deliberate choice, the prejudice she talks about is often a simplification of complex issues and graphic icons are themselves, also a simplified or even cliché shape that is used to depict something often much more complex. The icons tell their story in a very basic and direct fashion.

‘Mathematics’ was created by hand frame-for-frame in my studio using just a pile of foam boards, steel pins (about 8,000 of them) and 200+ metres of wool.

The clip was created using a stop-motion technique and was built entirely by hand. The 1,900 stills used to make the film were incredibly labour-intensive to make and the whole process took roughly 200 hours to complete, including making the original artwork, building the set, weaving the wool, photographing the frames and editing the video.

A minial amount of retouching was done to stay true to the original idea which was to keep it as simple, real and as handcrafted as possible.’
