LOUIS COLE RELEASES NEW ALBUM ‘NOTHING’ WITH METROPOLE ORKEST
Louis Cole, known for his work with the electro-funk band KNOWER and his solo projects, is recognized for his virtuosic playing and creative approach to music. His collaboration with the Metropole Orkest, under the direction of chief conductor Jules Buckley, takes his music to a new level.
Together, he embarked on a series of sold-out concerts across Europe with the 50-piece orchestra, Cole’s band, and guest artists such as his longtime creative partner Genevieve Artadi. Except for a few re-recorded vocals and instrumental overdubs, everything you hear on nothing comes from these ecstatic live performances.
This is remarkable because nothing was almost not an album until the very end. It was a collaboration, a series of concerts, a crossover between two worlds. Cole had been eagerly awaiting an opportunity like this for years. His father was a big fan of classical music, and as a child, he absorbed much of it. When he got the chance to work on a project involving an orchestra, he immediately went all in with the writing. The final recording includes 17 tracks and spans over an hour of music – and yet, a few more tracks had to be left on the cutting room floor.
For nine months, he selected the best takes, refined the sonic balance, and adjusted the frequencies until the orchestral parts really shone. “I was sad when the mixing was done,” he laughs. “Sometimes, when I’m mixing my own solo stuff, I feel like a song needs a little magical dust. But when you’re mixing an entire orchestra and your own rhythm section, there’s so much human energy! You don’t have to add any magic. It was there the whole time.”
nothing is now available on all major streaming platforms.
